I've gotten around quite a bit by now, and it's shaped my perspective and adaptability. Belgium is where I made my longest-lasting friendships. In Tajikistan I learnt English like it was my own mother tongue. Papua New Guinea is where I discovered my love for sailing and the ocean, and Australia was a sporadic, intermittent second home for some years. Now I've returned to Vienna, my birthplace, to pursue my studies.
On one hand, I feel I've grown a lot from moving around so much; on the other, I sometimes fear I never quite learnt how to settle in one place for too long.
In Vienna, I'm studying Computer Science, with a focus in data analysis, and am considering proceeding into either a Data Science or a Bioinformatics Master's down the line. On the side, I've been intermittently taking light coursework for the Mathematics BSc, the degree I originally started with. By now, I'm highly comfortable in C++, Python, and SQL.
In my time away from Uni, I've spent my time in Vienna volunteering at cybersecurity conferences, being exposed to state-of-the-art insights from academia and industry, and also some months at OeKB, Austria's export credit and capital market services bank, as a Business Intelligence Intern, where I got hands-on with their data warehouse, OLAP databases, SQL interfaces, and report creation tools used in day-to-day work.
I've also taken to working with my fellow students, being employed by the Austrian Student Association as a counsellor for more than a year, and now myself serving as a Student Representative at the Faculty of Computer Science. In the near future I hope to further my involvement with students at the University of Vienna, and intend to serve as a tutor at the Faculty of Mathematics in the coming semesters.
The main thing I do miss in Vienna is the sailing. In Port Moresby, it was one of my main pastimes, forming a close bond to nature and the ocean, and providing an escape for my sanity during COVID-19. I intend to pursue a European Skipper Certification in the near future to complement my PNGYA Certification.
I have taken up light hobby photography too - some shots can be seen here.
